작가 소개
카라 조슬린(Kara Joslyn)은 1983 년 미국 샌디에고 출생으로 미국 로스엔젤레스에 거주하며 스토리텔링과 환영을 주제로 입체적 회화를 그린다. 작품 속 달빛이 깃든 공간은 환상 및 현실과 결합하며 불안정하면서도 매력적인 작가만의 알레고리를 형성한다. 1950년대 공예 교본과 신화를 작업의 소재로 삼으며 가내 장식적 요소들을 시간을 초월한 독특한 형상으로 재배치해 보는 이들의 시각을 교란시킨다. 분말형 차량용 페인트 안료를 혼합하여 표현해 내는 홀로그램 효과는 작가의 환영에 대한 관심에서 비롯된다. 또한 이탈리아 화가 카라바조의 빛에 영감을 받은 작가는 과거 컴퓨터가 발명되기 이전 그래픽 디자인에 사용되었던 에어브러시를 작업에 활용하여 디지털 이미지 같은 분위기를 연출한다. 이 모든 것들이 합해져 작가의 작업은 역사적 상징성과 미래의 저변, 그리고 우리의 무의식을 엮어 시간을 넘나드는 여행을 선사한다. 작가는 “만약 사진이 거짓의 지표, 즉 거짓을 말하는 진실이라면, 나는 회화를 눈속임, 즉 진실을 말하는 거짓이라 생각하고 싶다” 라 말한다.
